Travel insurance FAQs

Insurance terms can sound more complicated than they are. Here are the important ones in plain English.

What is Emergency Medical travel insurance?

It can cover eligible emergency medical expenses while travelling outside your home province or country, subject to the policy, limits and exclusions.

Does it include emergency transportation or repatriation?

Many Emergency Medical plans include eligible emergency transportation and may include medical repatriation when medically necessary and arranged according to the policy.

What is Trip Cancellation coverage?

It can reimburse eligible prepaid, non-refundable travel costs when you must cancel for a covered reason listed in the policy.

What is Trip Interruption coverage?

It can help with certain eligible costs when a covered event forces you to interrupt or change a trip after departure.

What does baggage coverage do?

Depending on the plan, baggage coverage may provide benefits for covered loss, damage or delay of luggage and personal effects, subject to limits and exclusions.

What is Travel Delay coverage?

It may reimburse certain additional expenses when a covered delay lasts long enough to meet the policy requirements.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

It depends on the policy. Some plans use stability periods or other medical eligibility rules. Medical questions should be answered accurately and the wording reviewed before purchase.

Do I need travel insurance for travel within Canada?

Provincial health coverage may not pay every cost when you are outside your home province. Travel medical insurance can provide additional protection depending on the plan.

Does travel insurance cover every reason for cancelling?

No. Standard cancellation coverage responds to covered reasons defined in the policy. Cancel-for-any-reason protection, where available, is a separate type of benefit with its own conditions.

When should I buy Trip Cancellation insurance?

It is generally best to consider it when you book or make non-refundable payments, because coverage only applies according to the policy’s purchase requirements and covered events.

Are adventure sports covered?

Not always. Certain sports or activities may be excluded or require specific coverage. Check the policy before participating.

What information is important for a travel quote?

Typically the travellers’ ages, home province, destination, travel dates, desired coverage and relevant medical information are important for determining options.
